Fenugreek (Hindi-Methi): Fenugreek seeds are high in soluble fiber. The seeds help lower blood sugar level by slowing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. Consumption of powdered fenugreek helps reduce the rise in post-meal blood glucose levels, in people with Type 2 diabetes.
Bitter Gourd (Hindi-Karela): Bitter Gourd is rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, C and iron. Its inclusion in diet, helps prevent/delay diabetes related complications like retinopathy, neuritis and defective metabolism of carbohydrates. The juice of bitter gourd is more effective in lowering blood sugar and HbA1c level as compared to its dried form.
Jambu fruit (Hindi-Kala Jamun): Jambu fruit and its leaves, are both beneficial for people with diabetes. The black plum has anti-diabetic properties which help convert starch into energy and keep the blood sugar level under control. Diabetics should eat jambu regularly because of its low glycemic index.
Garlic (Hindi-Lasoon): Garlic is also a good source of vitamin B-6 and C. Vitamin C also plays a role in maintaining blood sugar level and vitamin B-6 aids carbohydrate metabolism.
Aloe Vera (Hindi-Gheekuvar): Aloe Vera is a well-known liver tonic. Its regular use tones up the hepatic-biliary system and regulates glucose and fat. Intake of aloe vera juice helps maintain blood sugar level and therefore is useful in treating people with diabetes.
Turmeric or Curcumin (Hindi-Haldi): Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid found in turmeric. Curcumin extract from rhizomes of turmeric has been known to contain anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties. In addition, it helps delay the development of Type 2 diabetes, improve β-cell functions, prevent β-cell death, and reduce insulin resistance.
Cinnamon (Hindi- Dalchini): Results from a clinical study published in the Diabetes Care journal in 2003, suggest that cinnamon bark improves blood glucose and cholesterol levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. It also helps reduce the risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Curry Leaves (Hindi- Curry Patta): Curry leaves contain agents that slow down the rate of starch to glucose breakdown. These leaves can also control the amount of glucose entering the bloodstream. They are beneficial for people with diabetes.
Goose berry (Hindi- Amla): Goose berry is a very rich source of vitamin C, an antioxidant vitamin that helps remove the free radicals. It is an effective traditional remedy to prevent pancreatitis. It also contains chromium, a mineral that regulates carbohydrate metabolism and helps the body become more responsive to insulin, thereby keeping the blood sugar levels in control.
Psyllium (Hindi- Isabgole): Psyllium is a very high fiber food. Psyllium helps in controlling blood sugar level by inhibiting the excessive absorption of sugar in the intestines.
